The Metternich Lodge is a one-story residence for visiting artists, a one-story connecting screen porch, and a two-story residence for the executive director of Ox-Bow.
The visiting artist portion of the lodge includes independent living quarters for two artists, a studio and a gallery. A small kitchen and a private deck complete these self-sufficient accommodations. Exposed timber roof framing in the studio and gallery provide additional spatial depth. The generous skylight located over the gallery fills the center of this one-story building with abundant light filtered by the tree canopy.
The executive director’s residence includes bedrooms, bathrooms, and a private screen porch on the first floor. The kitchen and living areas are located on the second floor to take advantage of the spectacular views of the lagoon and sand dunes, best seen from within the glass walled sun-room. The dramatic open living space with exposed timber roof structure skillfully blends the need for privacy in a bustling summer campus filled with artists and students with a needed sense of connection to the campus as a whole during the less populated winter months.
The positioning of the lodge just behind the first line of trees adjacent to the central meadow, used as the campus public square, takes advantage of the seasonal shading and camouflage provided in the summer while maximizing solar heat gain during winter for additional comfort.
