As part of a neighborhood renewal effort, SMNG-A provided planning and design services for 65 new affordable rental apartments. This new development is situated in an area adjacent to the West Washington Street Historic District, an area with housing stock that dates from the 1870s through the 1920s.
The buildings feature hip and gable cottage roof lines with L-shaped floor plans, consistent with the residential style of that time. Each structure was planned to reflect the period design characteristics and scale existing single-family residences in the historic district. By locating two and sometimes three dwelling units within each structure, the bulk of new and old match seamlessly thereby maintaining a consistent streetscape.
The project consists of four different building types that include amenities such as barrier free entries, wraparound front porches and tenant parking spaces.
