A former warehouse has been converted into six housing units through the process of addition and subtraction. A 15-foot wide courtyard has been created on the south façade for five housing units along the length of the building. The housing is developed as a vertical two-story module, 24-feet wide with double height living spaces facing the courtyard. The details of each module differ based on the design of each architect. A palate of industrial materials including steel bar joists, metal siding, and steel grating are combined to make the courtyard a magical place. This courtyard parti is an excellent prototype for “deep” buildings that do not have street frontage.
