SMNG-A was one of 15 architectural firms selected to assist the Chicago Board of Education with its late 1990’s $1.5 billion expansion and renovation program. The 82,000 square foot addition to Lloyd School was assigned to SMNG-A because of the proposed school projects it was the most complex and politically difficult due to land acquisition problems.

The program called for the expansion to be accomplished in two phases with separate wings located on opposite ends of the existing school. The Program Manager also required that the construction documents be completed in eight weeks or less. SMNG-A was able to meet the schedule while keeping the project within the budget. As with other major CPS projects, the building was based on a previously developed prototype design which was modified to meet the specific site and local program needs.
