As part of a major upgrade to Nathan Hale Park by the Chicago Park District, SMNG-A was hired to design the renovation of the existing park facility as well as plan a major addition to the existing structure. The program included a new gymnasium with a high school regulation basketball court, locker rooms, club rooms, administrative offices, shower and toilet facilities, and the development of landscaped outdoor play spaces.

The site was redesigned to fully integrate with the facilities on the adjacent CPS elementary school property to create a recreational campus including ball fields, tennis courts, and an outdoor pool. This “good neighbor” policy is part of a new initiative to share the resources of local schools with Park District facilities to better serve the community.

This 100 year building was planned as an efficient low-maintenance structure utilizing durable materials.
