As part of a major upgrade to Nathan Hale Park by the Chicago Park District, SMNG A was hired for the renovation of the existing park facility and to plan a major addition to the existing structure. The program included a new gymnasium with an NCAA regulation basketball court, locker rooms, club rooms, administrative offices, shower and toilet facilities, and the development of landscaped outdoor play spaces.

The site was redesigned to fully integrate with the facilities on the adjacent CPS elementary school property to create a recreational campus including ball fields, tennis courts, and an outdoor pool. This “good neighbor” policy is part of a new initiative to share the resources of local schools with Park District facilities to better serve the community. Durable materials were utilized to create an efficient low-maintenance structure. Materials include a masonry veneer exterior walls, ground-faced CMU masonry interior walls, terrazzo floors and exposed steel structure ceilings.
