This project converted a former warehouse into six housing units through a process of addition and subtraction. A 12-foot wide landscaped courtyard was created for five housing units along the southern length of the building. Each unit was developed as a vertical two-story module, 24-feet wide with double height living spaces facing the courtyard.
Details of each module differ among the three designers. A common palette of industrial materials was retained including steel bar joists, metal siding, and steel grating to make the courtyard a magical place. This courtyard parti is an excellent prototype for “deep” buildings that have minimal street frontage.
