JACK MURCHIE

Jack has been a licensed practicing architect since 1975 and joined SMNG A Ltd. in 1986 as a principal. He has served as designer and principal-in-charge of several significant projects for community-based not-for-profit agencies in Chicago. Among the most notable of these projects is the 70,000 SF Erie Community Center which features primary healthcare and childcare facilities in a former manufacturing building, the 22,000 SF Howard Brown Health Center, the 38,000 SF Infant Welfare Society of Chicago primary care health center, two centers for Northside Community Health in Humboldt Park and Englewood, and the 24,000 SF Pullman Health Center for Chicago Family Health Center. Jack served as a governing board director for Erie Family Health Center from 1994 through 2007.

Jack directed the campus master planning and design of several new buildings for the Ox-Bow School of Art and Artists’ Residency in Saugatuck, Michigan. The new buildings at Ox-Bow include the Inn and Dormitory, Marshall Dormitory, Janie Dormitory, Metternich Lodge, Lutz Painting Studio, and Works on Paper Studio.

Jack and his wife Carol split their time between New York City, Chicago, and Lakeside, Michigan. In Michigan, Jack continues to design award-winning year-round private residences and summer retreats and supports the office through QA/QC monitoring of ongoing projects. Over the years, Jack has hand-built a writing studio, workshop, and guest house at the Lakeside property. In his free time, Jack bicycles, reads books, and gardens.
