SMNG A is an architecture, planning and interior architecture firm with more than 40 years of continuous operation in the Chicago area. The firm is owned, managed and staffed by architects and designers with particular and extensive experience in the design and planning of both new and existing buildings.

The firm has provided professional services in a broad range of projects for both private and public sector clients including many community based not-for-profit organizations. Our value-oriented practice approaches all projects individually based on the specific project needs, preferences, and budget constraints of our clients.

Projects undertaken by the firm vary widely in size and scope. Our services include needs assessment and facility programming, site analysis and planning, building design, and construction administration services for single and multi-family residential developments, health care, child day care, educational and judicial facilities. The diversity of our practice is united by an overarching commitment to attentive client service, imaginative design and high professional standards.

SMNG A Ltd. is a professional corporation registered in the State of Illinois. Principals and corporate officers of the firm are Kenneth Schroeder, Jack Murchie, and Todd Niemiec. The office currently employs 9 personnel, 8 of whom have degrees in architecture, 5 of whom are licensed to practice architecture in the State of Illinois, 2 are licensed in Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin, 1 licensed in New York, 1 licensed in California and 2 of whom are LEED accredited professionals. TODD NIEMIEC

Todd joined SMNG A Ltd. in 1994, was promoted to Associate in 1998 and Principal in 2005. Todd manages the day-to-day operations of our architectural practice. He has served as the lead conceptual planner, coordinator, and designer on a wide range of project types and seamlessly weaves his knowledge of the building code and regulatory requirements into the firm’s thoughtful design work. Todd approaches architecture from a background in art and music and believes strongly in the power of the arts, music, and architectural design to heal, teach, inspire and improve lives and communities. He is interested in community-impact projects and finds great satisfaction in his pursuit in maximizing great architectural design within our Client’s budgets. From 1998-2002, and again in 2018-2019 Todd served as a volunteer on the Chicago Building and Planning Committee as part of the City of Chicago’s Code Initiative, engaged in the critical review and re-writing of Chapters 3-6 of the Chicago Building Code. In 2016 he participated in AIA’s TransForm business program, and in 2018 he graduated from the City Colleges of Chicago / Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Business Program. He has served as a visiting critic and guest lecturer at the Illinois Institute of Technology, University of Illinois at Chicago, and AIA Florida Southwest lecture series. Todd and his wife Julie have two young-adult daughters enrolled in college, and an adopted former racing greyhound whom they dote on. They take every free opportunity to enjoy live music, art, sailing and time with friends and family. email

KENNETH SCHROEDER

Ken Schroeder is the founder and former senior principal of SMNG A. Prior to founding the fi rm in 1976, he was a partner at Hinds, Schroeder, and Whitaker where he participated as partner-in charge of design on several award-winning projects. He is the founder of the loft movement in Chicago, a pioneer in the development of Printers Row and has over 40 years experience in renovation and adaptive re-use of historic buildings. His design skills encompass the range of the fi rm’s work. His design interest continues to focus on the intersection of client program and design intent, with a specifi c interest on the impact of sustainability, lean design and built form. Ken has lectured at numerous universities and his design work was recognized by his Fellowship in the AIA in 1991.

Under Mr. Schroeder’s leadership, SMNG A moved from early renovation projects, to the forefront of sustainable educational design. Work of the fi rm includes award winning adaptive-use, preservation and new construction projects and over 50 LEED accredited buildings.

JACK MURCHIE

Jack has been a licensed practicing architect since 1975 and joined SMNG A Ltd. in 1986 as a principal. He has served as designer and principal-in-charge of several significant projects for community-based not-for-profit agencies in Chicago. Among the most notable of these projects is the 70,000 SF Erie Community Center which features primary healthcare and childcare facilities in a former manufacturing building, the 22,000 SF Howard Brown Health Center, the 38,000 SF Infant Welfare Society of Chicago primary care health center, two centers for Northside Community Health in Humboldt Park and Englewood, and the 24,000 SF Pullman Health Center for Chicago Family Health Center. Jack served as a governing board director for Erie Family Health Center from 1994 through 2007. Jack directed the campus master planning and design of several new buildings for the Ox-Bow School of Art and Artists’ Residency in Saugatuck, Michigan. The new buildings at Ox-Bow include the Inn and Dormitory, Marshall Dormitory, Janie Dormitory, Metternich Lodge, Lutz Painting Studio, and Works on Paper Studio. Jack and his wife Carol split their time between New York City, Chicago, and Lakeside, Michigan. In Michigan, Jack continues to design award-winning year-round private residences and summer retreats and supports the office through QA/QC monitoring of ongoing projects. Over the years, Jack has hand-built a writing studio, workshop, and guest house at the Lakeside property. In his free time, Jack bicycles, reads books, and gardens. Email

Chey joined SMNG A Ltd. in 2007 and was named Associate in 2014. She brings experience learned over 20 years as Project Architect, Construction Administrator, and Sustainability Manager to early childhood, K-12 educational, and community development agency projects. Her achievements include serving as the Sustainability Lead on LEED projects in the office designed since 2010, resulting in over 10 LEED schools and additions. She has also led SMNG A’s team in the development of the Chicago Housing Authority’s first-ever design guidelines, guideline specifications, and drawing standards. More recently she has developed guideline specifications for IFF’s ECC QFA program. Chey has been active in AIA Chicago and currently serves on the Board of Directors as the Vice President of Education. Previously as the AIA Chicago Community Interface Committee KC Chair, she led the development of AIA Chicago’s Architects in Schools program, which teaches CPS middle school students on the impact of design and architecture. Chey, her husband Derek, two daughters and dog live in Oak Park. She enjoys listening to live music and has recently picked up playing pickleball. Email

Kysa joined SMNG A Ltd. in 2019. She has over fifteen years of experience in community-based architecture and sustainable design with project locations including Chicago, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Southern India. Her diversity of work ranges from K-8 schools (new design and renovation) in both the public and private sector, higher education, historic restoration, adaptive reuse, and residential design. Kysa believes that, through thoughtful design and collaboration, architecture has the potential to awaken the individual, create new possibilities for social engagement, and respond with sustainable solutions. She is co-chair of AIA Chicago’s Education Knowledge Committee. Notably, Kysa led the design and project coordination for both the Chicago Public School’s Belmont-Cragin Elementary School and the adjacent Chicago Park District’s Riis Park Fieldhouse, both situated in a 57-acre public park. These separate yet physically connected buildings serve the Belmont Cragin neighborhood with a newly constructed 80,000 SF PreK-8 school and a fully renovated 1920’s era 18,000 SF historic Fieldhouse including a new playground and splash pad. Kysa thoroughly enjoys collaborative and impactful projects, such as these, that require navigating the needs and aspirations of multiple entities: the client, school, parent community, neighbor community, parks council, alderman, and community outreach organizations. Kysa and her husband Ben enjoy exploring both the city and nature with their twin 9-year-old sons. In her free time, Kysa enjoys ceramics, painting, yoga, and spending time with family and friends. Marion joined SMNG A Ltd. in 2021, bringing over 10 years of experience as a project architect and manager for K-12, higher education, and commercial interior sectors, working on projects ranging from university campus master plans to new construction and major renovations. Marion has a wealth of knowledge in sustainability from her years as a sustainability coordinator for a large, multi-discipline A/E firm where she worked to implement a comprehensive energy design process at both the project and firm level. In this role she conducted in-depth research with Architecture 2030 on the embodied energy of building materials, developing internal tools to aid in the selection of building products and presenting her findings at construction conferences in the US and Canada. Having moved around the world throughout her childhood, Marion is happy to have made Chicago her home. She takes great pleasure in working on local projects where she can interact directly with the community and experience firsthand the impacts design and engagement have in our neighborhoods. Most recently, Marion has been working with the Chicago South Side Birth Center to design and build a birthing facility that will help address inequities in birth outcomes by providing culturally centered midwifery care within the city’s south side neighborhoods. When not in the office or on the construction site, you can find Marion with her husband and three children enjoying the numerous playgrounds of Hyde Park, riding bikes along Promontory Point, or working on crafts around the dining room table. Lucia joined SMNG A Ltd. in 2022 as a licensed architect, bringing her experience in K-12 education, higher education, commercial, and science and technology design to the firm. Her project experience ranges from small lab renovations and buildouts to large-scale new construction. Lucia is a strong believer in the impact of design and embraces the iterative design process, using diagrams and imagery development to not only facilitate client understanding of design proposals but also develop concepts and ideas. Prior to joining SMNG A Ltd., Lucia served as a contributing architect on the visioning, design development and construction documentation for several projects, including a 45,000 SF junior high school addition in Burbank County, a 180,000 SF new CTE high school in Pasco County, various renovations for Argonne National Labs, and a demonstration kitchen for US Foods. Lucia volunteers through ACE mentorship, AIA Chicago’s Architects in the Schools and Girl’s Build programs, and NOMA’s Project Pipeline; these programs offer students an opportunity to learn about architecture in hopes of seeing more diversity, equity, and inclusion in the design industry. In his tenure at SMNG A he has expanded his knowledge of construction, and in the process enhanced the effectiveness, accuracy and efficiency of technologies deployed in pursuit of our work and in communicating with others. Rafal has a passion for human-centered design that focuses on spatial experience: an approach that reflects human individuality while highlighting the transient disposition of nature. His passion is for projects that leave a lasting positive impact on the individual as well as the group, no matter how big or small. Among Rafal’s professional achievements with SMNG A are his design and management of the Chicago Park District Reed Dunning Comfort Station, construction document assistance on several Chicago Public Schools built by the Public Building Commission, design and construction assistance on Chicago Park District’s first indoor soccer facility in Jane Addams Park, design and construction administration services for the award-winning St. Clement Parish Center, and design and construction administration services on a complex mixed-use commercial, residential, and business building on north LaSalle Street. Always willing to extend a helping hand, he has served as a guest critic at the University of Kansas. One of Angel’s core values has been to use his multifaceted experience as an opportunity to continue learning from and teaching others. Throughout his career Angel has displayed a passion for growth and development of local communities through a supportive built environment, with an emphasis on building technology and sustainability. An active member of Chicago’s architecture community, Angel currently serves as a director on the board for Arquitectos, an all-inclusive organization supporting LatinX and other minority architects, engineers, and construction professionals. He has also served on aldermanic zoning review boards for the 1st and 47th wards of Chicago. Jim joined SMNG A Ltd. in 2022, bringing with him extensive experience in office and personnel management, organizational systems optimization, marketing, and graphic design skills. Assisting in the management and support of the architectural staff, Jim brings a fresh perspective and approach to how we communicate and express our ideas. With an extensive background in music and the arts, Jim understands that the design objectives, vision, and creative process specific to a project are unique and special. Working with our team of architects and designers, Jim seeks to understand, synthesize, and clarify the ideas, processes, and organization of our work, and reflect it to others in a thoughtful and concise manner.

Originally from the Chicago area, Jim has made Madison, Wisconsin his home for the past twenty years. He spends his free time shopping for hats, discovering new music, chilling with his cats, and exploring the backroads of the upper Midwest in his beloved Equus. Email

Process

Partner with our clients, understand aspirations and challenges, and articulate unique project needs. Engagement with our clients begins with listening, understanding, communicating, and partnership.

Research and understand parameters, identify and present options, and explore opportunities and efficiencies. The process from conception to construction is often driven by a range of considerations including project budget, building codes, zoning ordinances, and project-specific efficiencies. We research and evaluate these considerations and communicate these to our clients and the contractors to make appropriate design decisions.

Design to maximize function, flow and flexibility, test and adjust, re-evaluate if conditions change, and build stakeholder consensus. Good design relies on development of a concept, testing of the concept, and adjustment. The first ideas are not often the best and final solutions. Through the refinement process the clarity of the project is developed and stakeholder consensus is built.

Develop implementation plan, coordinate team to maintain design intent, implement with consistency of purpose. Realization of the project requires planning and tracking to ensure budget and other priorities are monitored at various stages of the work. Monitoring and coordination continue throughout all phases of work, from design through review of the progress work. We maintain the project integrity through communication with the Clients, design team, and construction team. We firmly believe in success together.
